Embedded within green meadows and fields, and surrounded by the peaks of former volcanoes, the town of Mendig is sure to surprise you with its many cultural and natural attractions. Within the German Volcano Museum "Lava Dome" in Mendig, 150 steps lead you through a rocky underworld which has existed since medieval times as a result of basalt disintegration. The lake Laacher See offers countless leisure opportunities, and on its banks you find the world-famous Benedictine Abbey "Maria Laach" which dates back to the year 1093. There are many popular cycle paths around Mendig which lead you through the volcanic landscape. If you arrive by train, you will be welcomed by the Art Nouveau railway station "Rheinische Eisenbahn", which was constructed on the orders of Germany’s last emperor.
